Fast Facts:
  • Chevrolet and GMC use the “C” designation for 2WD trucks and the “K” designation for 4WD trucks. Chevrolet follows the letter with either a “10” (1/2 ton), “20” (3/4 ton), or “30” (1 ton). However, GMC trucks use 1500, 2500, or 3500 instead (respectively)
  • The two available body styles were Stepside (shown here) or Fleetside. Long beds are 8ft long, and short beds are 6.5ft long. The term “stepside” refers to a cargo bed with inner “steps” fore and aft the rear wheel well, resulting in a “flared” look. It also meant the bed had no intrusions from either side wheel well
  • This 2nd generation Chevy truck represents the first time GM approached truck buyers the same way they did car buyers – by offering more creature comforts, extensive sound deadening, more color combinations, and chrome trim galore. Rear coil spring suspension replaced the less compliant leaf spring setup found on the previous generation. The customizability and comfort distinguish this generation the most from previous generation trucks
  • This is the first generation that could be optioned with Chevrolet’s 350ci small block V8, as well as the 396 big block from the Chevelle
  • In 1969 the 396 was bored .30 over to roughly 400 cubic inches, but Chevrolet kept this quiet as they didn’t want to disrupt the 396 “branding” that hovered around the Chevelle. In truck applications, this same engine was labeled as a 400ci (RPO L47). This might not seem like a big deal, but it confused Chevrolet purists for decades, as they could not find any differences between the two engines
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Updated paint scheme on the grille (horizontal fins replace the “egg-crate” look on ’69 models)
  • First year of the tilt steering wheel option
  • 1970 models are virtually identical to 1969 models
  • 1969 and 1970 models are generally grouped together in terms of model year changes – these years can be identified by their steep angle hood nose (sporting a bowtie) as well as the horizontal aluminum grille bar w/ parking lights. These years also feature fender emblems and front/rear side marker lights
