Fast Facts:
  • The Series 3 XKE (known as the E-type outside of the U.S) is the only E-Type to feature a V12. The previous series came exclusively with inline 6 engines. This new V12, which was originally developed for the 24 hrs of Le Mans, could propel the XKE to a near 150 MPH top speed
  • In addition to the V12 engine, the E-type suspension was redesigned with a wider track, wider tires and flared arches to accommodate the larger engine. While it was a fantastic car with plenty of power, many consider the Series 3 more of a “grand tourer” than a sports car, as its heavier weight and larger dimensions detract from the “sports car” character found in previous E-Type Jags
  • While considered one of Jaguar’s most iconic engines, the V12’s history of cooling system issues cannot go unnoticed. There are many contributing factors toward this phenomenon, one of which can be found in the factory service manual: Jaguar encouraged the use of its own “Radiator Leak Sealer” (aka Barrs Leak) during coolant drain/refill intervals. This was an accepted method (at the time) of solving cooling system woes – the liquid sealer would solidify when in contact with air, which would theoretically seal off any leaks
  • Unfortunately, there was almost always air inside the system. The highest point in the cooling system is the heater core, not the filler neck, and many owners did not acknowledge this when draining and refilling the coolant. The result is that most E-Type Jags on the road have air in their system
  • So when you add the sealer, it would react with the air and solidify, clogging up things like the radiator and heater core. Many Jaguar mechanics owe the success of their business to Jaguar for placing this horrific advice in the manual, as any radiator maintained by the book has a 100% chance of getting plugged!
  • In addition, the V12 engine utilizes a self-bleeding system that functions by routing any “air pockets” to the radiator via hoses, where the pockets won’t do much harm. This system worked … except when it didn’t
  • Despite the use of aluminum in the heads and engine block, there are many steel parts within the system prone to rusting. The rust debris (and scale) can easily clog up the hoses of the self-bleeding system, rendering the system ineffective
  • This cooling system is an achilles heel to an otherwise fantastic and legendary V12
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Rubber bumper guards are now fitted to the rear, in addition to the front
  • In October of the 1974MY, the final 50 Commemorative cars are built, all in black. This is the final model year of the E-Type
  • In the previous year (1973) the old Model 8 automatic transmission was replaced with a new Borg-Warner Model 12. Also in ’73, the quad exit exhaust is replace by a dual tip setup
  • The 2+2 models end production in late 1973
  • Compared to the Series 1 and 2, the Series 3 featured an enlarged cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches to accommodate a wider track (and wider V12 engine), wider tyres, quad exhaust tips, and most notably, a V12 badge in the rear
  • The Series 3 was only available as a long wheelbase car. The short wheelbase model was dropped for the Series 3, leaving only the 2+2 Coupe and the two-seater roadster – both of which share the same long wheelbase platform. The roadster, however, ditches the back seats for a more appropriate storage space area
