Fast Facts:
  • This R107 generation is the second longest, single generation production run in all of Mercedes history, sitting only behind the equally famous G-Wagon
  • Innovative wind-deflecting moldings on the A-pillars serve to channel off incoming mud and rainwater and keep the side windows clean in inclement weather
  • The hard and soft tops were each an ingenious design as well. No trunk space is used when the soft top is folded away, and buyers received an aluminum rack to hold the hardtop on its side while in storage
  • The seat material, known as MB-tex (the Stuttgart equivalent of Kevlar), is renowned for its incredible longevity and resistance to wear, stains, and tears. The material was also pleasant enough that nearly all buyers chose it over the genuine leather option
  • A problem with pre-1977 450SL’s was the location of the catalytic converter, which sat in the tight engine bay. There was very little airflow available to cool the cat, so engine bay temperatures were quite high
  • The high temps would fry the wiring, the vacuum lines, and even boil the fuel (causing vapor lock and hard re-starts when warm). In 1977, the converter was moved underneath the car (behind the transmission) fixing all the above problems
Key Model Year Changes:
  • 1977 was the year the catalytic converters moved downstream. Previous years had the cat under the hood, which caused vapor lock and hard restarts over time
  • 1977 is the final year of the manually operated air conditioning system (knobs and levers = reliable). The following year (1978) saw a new, modern automatic system that controlled the coolant flow to the heater core, as well as the vacuum that actuated the interior vents. The electronic/vacuum climate control servo (supplied by Chrysler) was highly unreliable (broken seals, leaking coolant, etc) and was eliminated in 1981
  • 1980 saw a reduction in final drive to 2.65:1 (vs the current 3.07:1). This severely reduced straightline performance, as a 0-60mph sprint required 11.3 seconds for the 1980 model
