Fast Facts:
  • The 320i (not sold in the U.S) featured a 2.0L M20B20-LE inline-six with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection
  • The E30 was designed by the German car designer Claus Luthe. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential European car designers of the modern era
  • Interiors of these cars are incredibly well built. Unlike many European cars at the time, the E30 didn’t use a foam-backed headliner, which were known for losing adhesion and sagging due to disintegrating foam. The same can be said for the door panels
  • The E30 featured electric door locks that were virtually instantaneous, with no delay
  • To help the E30 feel “roomier” inside, BMW installed a highly compact semi-trailing arm suspension in the rear. This setup allowed for excellent cabin and trunk space
  • Unfortunately, semi-trailing arms are not ideal for handling (on paper, at least) as they are notorious for dynamic toe and camber changes when the wheels move up and down during hard cornering. This can cause bump steer and a loss of rear grip. The “semi” refers to the sweep angle of the arm, which is 15 degrees in the E30 (a pure trailing arm would be zero degrees). Essentially, the wheels see increased negative camber as the trailing arm moves up during compression (suspension gets loaded during hard cornering). On the contrary, the wheels toe in and gain positive camber as they are unloaded
  • This isn’t to say the E30 can’t handle – it just makes it trickier around a race track compared to other suspension designs. It produces a “tail happy” characteristic that many drivers enjoy
  • The drivetrain of a 325i (as well as a widened version of its front suspension) was used in the BMW Z1 roadster
Key Model Year Changes:
  • On non-US market cars (like this example), ’87 is the first year of the Series II cosmetic update, which lasted until the end of production in 1991. The cosmetic changes of Series II didn’t occur for U.S cars until later (’89 was the first year for body-colored bumpers on U.S cars)
  • Series II changes include updated tail lights and body colored front bumper (replacing the old metal bumper). Much of the chrome trim around the car disappears, replaced with black trim. Rust protection was also improved with the update
  • Horsepower increases on the 320i by about 4hp. Peak torque drops about 8 ft lbs and occurs 300 RPM higher
  • The 325e (“e” for economy) is axed
