Fast Facts:
  • The SS featured the High Output 5.0L V8 from the Camaro. However, while the Camaro received fuel injection in 1985, the SS kept the computer-controlled Quadrajet 4bbl carburetor. Considering production didn’t end until 1988, the SS was one of the few cars on the market that still featured a carburetor
  • SS models also came with GM’s 3.73 Performance Axle (LSD optional), sport steering wheel, sport suspension, and dual exhaust
  • The SS sold extremely well, but not because of its street performance. Back when Dale Earnhardt switched from Ford to Chevy in 1984 and used the Monte Carlo SS to win the Daytona 500 and Talladega, everyone wanted one – it was Chevrolet’s own “Mustang GT” of the car scene. Styling was on point, sharing a few design touches with the Turbo Regals of the time
  • Despite the Nascar connection, all SS Monte Carlo’s came with an 85 MPH speedometer up until 1987. This can be blamed on the NHSTA, who passed a bill in 1979 saying that the speedo on all cars cannot read more than 85 MPH. This was in response to the U.S energy crisis (“let’s slow cars down and save gas”). It wasn’t very effective, and was repealed a year later
  • However, rather than spend money changing the dashboards on every car again, most car makers just left the 85 speedo in place until the next model redesign. Since there was no worthy replacement for the SS after this generation, GM decided to do the car justice and install a proper 120 MPH speedometer in 1987
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First year of the 120 MPH speedometer
  • New rear spoiler, front fascia, and exterior striping
  • New SS emblem
  • New door panel design and interior cloth
  • The following year (1988) saw nothing new. Many options were now standard, such as tinted glass and premium stereo
  • The SS was built from 1983 to 1988
