Fast Facts:

  • The 560 SEC was the 2 door coupe version of the S-Class sedan (W126). It is a true 4 seater with only a slightly shorter wheelbase than the 4 door S-Class. The S Class model line was made up of the SE (base 4dr), SEL (stretched 4dr), and SEC (coupe)
  • Designing an S Class coupe meant shifting the B-pillar farther back to accommodate longer doors. The pillarless design allowed Mercedes Benz to develop the world’s first seat belt “presenters”. After the door is shut and engine is turned on, the shoulder belts extend themselves 30cm toward the driver for an effortless reach. Once the driver is buckled up, the presenters retract back into place on the B-pillar. This tech is still in use today
  • The 5.5L V8 (M117) was the most powerful engine available for the S-class. It’s 155 mph top speed made it faster than the Porsche 911 3.2 and Ferrari Mondial of the same year
  • The optional fully automatic climate control system used an overhead mounted sensor to give a more precise reading of interior temperature. When the sunroof was opened, the sensor could automatically detect outside air flow and re-adjust the heat settings to maintain the desired temperature (without driver intervention)
Key Model Year Changes:

  • First year of the optional electric rear window shade
  • 1987 had virtually no changes from the previous year (1986), which saw major updates (such as new engine options)
  • The following year (1988) featured a new 100 watt 10 speaker sound system with 6.5″ door speakers and multi-channel amps mounted behind the rear seats
  • 1989 saw a completely redesigned interior with folded leather door panels and rear-side panels, new seats w/ bigger side bolsters, 120W heated seats (vs 90W), updated EGR system, check engine light, improved engine diagnostics, standard passenger side airbag, passenger side knee bolster, improved rear defroster, and locking center console storage bin with a roll-away cover finished in burl wood
