1991 mercedes benz 420 sel for sale

Fast Facts:

  • The 420 SEL was the stretched platform of the S-Class sedan (W126). The S Class model line was made up of the SE (base 4dr), SEL (stretched 4dr), and SEC (coupe) – the latter of which is only available with the top of the line 5.5L V8. The numerical designation correlates to the engine size: “420” refers to the 4.2L V8 (M116). Weirdly, “560” refers to the 5.5L M117 V8
  • 1991 560 models could be optioned with “ASR” (Anti-Slip Regulation) which was the industry’s first form of electronic traction control. The option included a yellow warning indicator in the center of the speedometer that flashed when the system was in active
  • The W126 could be optioned with self leveling hydropneumatic suspension. Known as HPF III, this system automatically lowers the car 24 mm when vehicle speed exceeds 74 MPH. This improves aerodynamics and increases high speed stability. HPF also adjusts the ride quality from hard to soft based on vehicle speed and road condition, improving comfort and drivability. The driver can even raise the car by 35 mm when driving over harsh/uneven road surfaces (only up to 50 MPH)
  • The optional fully automatic climate control system uses an overhead mounted sensor to give a more precise reading of interior temperature. When the sunroof is opened, the sensor can automatically detect outside air flow and re-adjust the heat settings to maintain the desired temperature (without driver intervention)
Key Model Year Changes:

  • Final year of the W126 S class Mercedes, ending a 12 year production run. Replaced by the W140 in 1992
  • Passenger airbags are now standard across the entire S class line
  • Hydropneumatic suspension (HPF III) is now limited to long wheelbase models only
  • The biggest changes occurred back in 1989, when the W126 saw a completely redesigned interior (new folded leather door panels and rear-side panels, new seats w/ bigger side bolsters, 120W heated seats (vs 90W), passenger side knee bolster, improved rear defroster, and locking center console storage bin with a roll-away cover finished in burl wood). 1989 also featured an updated EGR system, check engine light, and improved engine diagnostics
