Fast Facts:
  • Turbo models featured the 7M-GTE twin-cam inline 6 paired with an in-house turbo and air-to-air intercooler. The A70 Supra Turbo was the fastest production Japanese car on the market when it came out in 1987 – a feat that remained until 1989 when Acura debuted the NSX
  • Desirable slick-top models (non-Targa) are slightly stiffer and less prone to squeaks and leaks
  • 7M-GTE engine was not only Toyota’s first distributor-less engine, but it was the first mass-produced distributor-less engine in the U.S. The cylinders share 3 coil packs (mounted on the cam covers) and utilize a cam position sensor driven by the exhaust cam
  • The 7M-GTE featured Toyota’s new “Acoustic Control Induction System” (ACIS) technology, which regulated air compression pulses within the intake runners to increase low RPM power. The effect is similar to that of a variable-length intake manifold
  • Turbo models get a standard sport package that includes a limited-slip differential, headlight washers, ABS, and Toyota’s Electronically Modulated Suspension (TEMS). This system controls ride stiffness by electronically adjusting the valving in the gas-filled shocks based on the driver’s input (selecting between “normal” or “sport” on the dash)
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First year of the 5 spoke wheels (replacing the old “saw blade” style)
  • ABS is now standard
  • Power steering cooler is added
  • All exterior body trim is now color-matched to the car
  • Front speakers are now 6.5″. Subwoofer is now an option (rare)
  • Sunroof is now an option for slicktop models
  • The Toyota logo replaces the old square “Supra” emblem on the nose
  • Substantial sound deadening is added throughout the cabin
  • A dimmer switch replaces the extra coin holder that was added in 1989
  • The “Toyota” nameplate is now absent from the front grille (driver’s side)
