Fast Facts:
  • While it was based on the Camry, the ES 300 is 5 inches longer, uses a different suspension setup, and weighs 200 pounds more. The extra weight was due to increased sound insulation, added options, and the larger dimensions
  • This car was available with a 5spd manual transmission, but the take rate was low. The manual option was dropped in 1994
  • The 3.0 V6 was originally intended for SUV/truck duty, which means it was tall and wasn’t designed for compact FWD engine bays. However, since the ES was FWD, the tall V6 had to be tilted on its side a whole 15 degrees (transverse mounted) just so it could fit. The means the rear cylinder bank can only be accessed by removing the intake plenum
  • The 3.0 V6 used for ’92 and ’93 featured a cast iron block with a forged steel crankshaft. The DOHC 24v aluminum heads pair with a split-chamber intake plenum using Toyota’s ACIS variable-intake system. There are 3 sets of runners for each head
  • The dual chamber intake system helped provide a wide power band – peak torque practically lasted from 2500 to 4600 RPM
  • The ES was one of the first cars at Toyota available with full body-colored bumpers (shown here) giving it a “monochrome” look when paired with a single-tone paint scheme
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Fuel filler cap now features a tether strap
  • New automatic-locking safety-belt retractors
  • The 2nd generation ES began production in 1992
  • The first major update occurred on models produced after Aug. 1994. The update included an upgrade to an all aluminum 3.0 V6 (1MZ-FE). The previous 3.0 was a cast iron block with aluminum heads. The 5spd manual is dropped with the new engine
  • 1995 models also received an updated 3-slot grille (replacing the previous 4-slot grille) as well as new headlights, fog lights, and an outside air temperature display. ’95 models also made the switch to an R-134a air conditioning system, ditching the old R12 freon system
  • 1996 was the first year of the 3rd generation, featuring a stiffer chassis, a slight power pump, and more
