Fast Facts:
  • The Lightning starts out as a basic F-150 1/2 ton short bed XLT. Ford then takes the 5.0 V8 from the 1993 SVT Cobra and strokes it to 5.8L, creating the Lightning’s 351 Windsor. The extra 49 cubic inches give the Lightning 55 more lb ft of torque than the Cobra (as well as 5 extra hp)
  • SVT Cobra engines feature GT-40 aluminum cylinder heads. An aggressive camshaft is used to take advantage of the increased valve and port sizes, and a tuned aluminum intake manifold optimizes airflow from the enlarged throttle body. Factory tubular headers and dual exhaust finish off the engine upgrades
  • The aluminum pistons, which feature thinner rings to reduce internal friction, are manufactured with high silicone content. Silicone adds thermal stability to the alloy, allowing a wider temperature range of operation
  • All Lightnings feature an SVT-upgraded E40D electronic 4spd automatic to enhance longevity and strength. Power is routed through a 4″ aluminum driveshaft and a limited-slip differential with steep 4.10 gearing
  • A modified version of the Lightning’s powerplant was chosen for use in the limited production 1995 Cobra R
  • The SVT-tuned suspension includes Monroe Formula GP shocks and a 1″ sway bar. Steering is enhanced with a 4×4-spec pitman arm
  • The improved handling came at the small cost of max payload and trailer weight. Cargo capacity was cut in half from the standard F-150 XLT (from 1,485 to 745 pounds). However, the Lightning still came with a 5000 lb towing capacity, which is only ~600 pounds shy of the regular F-150
Key Model Year Changes:
  • New bench seat option that features a fold-down center console
  • First year of the White paint color. Lightnings can be ordered in black, white, or red
  • Very few changes occurred during production of the Lightning (1993 to 1995)
