Fast Facts:

  • The less expensive SC300, which came with the base Supra’s 2JZ engine, could be had with a 5spd manual transmission. Considering the 300 was lighter and had shorter gearing, it’s performance (with the 5spd) matches closely with that of the SC400. However, the SC400 had more torque and a broader torque curve from its V8
  • The 1UZ-FE V8 engine came from the LS400, and it could barely fit (it required a different air filter assembly). However, Lexus loved the SC concept car design so much that they were willing to rearrange (or even redesign) the front end hardware to maintain the beautiful shape
  • During development, for example, Lexus found that the nose (which has no grille) couldn’t provide enough air for the radiator. Rather than redesign the front end, Lexus developed an ultra powerful variable-speed hydraulic cooling fan (driven by a hydraulic pump on the accessory drive) to provide adequate engine cooling
  • Another example: the slim front end didn’t allow the use of the company’s projector-beam headlight assembly. The solution? Split the low beams from the high beams. The inboard lights you see are the high beams, while the outboard lights are the main low beams
  • While the Lexus SC also shared the double wishbone suspension from the A80 Supra, its tuning and geometry were geared more towards that of a GT car
  • The long doors have special dual-pivot (articulating) hinges that push the entire door outward when opened, allowing rear passengers to exit and enter in tight parking spaces

Key Model Year Changes:

  • First year of the new CFC-free R134 air conditioning system, replacing the R12 system of the previous year
  • Thicker steering wheel with updated stitching
  • Instrument panel lighting is switched from white to amber
  • First year of OBD II, replace the OBD 1 diagnostics system of the previous year (1994 and 1995 were OBD II “Phase-in” years for many car models)
  • New emissions equipment added
  • Slight cosmetic changes are made the following year (1995). The next significant mechanical change doesn’t occur until 1998, when it receives a new VVT engine sporting 290hp and a new 5spd automatic
