- The Riviera came back as an all-new car in 1995 after a one year absence
- The top engine option was the supercharged L67 3800 V6 (shown here). This same supercharged engine eventually found its way into the ’04-’05 Impala SS and ’04-’06 Monte Carlo SS. The L67 made the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list for 1995, 1996, and 1997
- Instead of an eight cylinder, GM opted for a supercharged V6 in its top models as it provides V8 power while yielding 27 MPG highway
- During the Riviera’s development, Buick employed a “Seat Comfort Team” whose sole purpose was to eliminate all uncomfortable pressure points in the seats. The team included a physical therapist along with Buick engineers and both short and tall men/women. Over 80 thousand miles of R&D were completed to develop a seat that is as comfortable as possible over long trips. Details include a lumbar support “strap” rather than a lump or bulk (which can interfere with lower back comfort)
- During its time, it was marketed as the world’s most spacious luxury coupe. The standard front bench seat allows the Riviera to seat 6 people – 3 in the front, 3 in the rear. This was unheard of for a 2 door coupe
- The Riviera’s body was wind tunnel tested to ensure its design was as aerodynamically optimized as possible. This wasn’t done for performance – it was done to reduce wind noise and buffeting at freeway speeds. Acoustic panels and specially designed window seals help keep the car quiet
- An optional in-car phone system could be programmed for two different numbers, to keep business and personal calls separate
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the 8th generation Riviera. There was no 1994 Riviera
- The following year (1996) sees a power boost to 240hp thanks to a bigger supercharger. 1996 models also receive platinum-tip spark plugs, the latest antifreeze (both designed to last 100,000 miles), and an updated keyless entry system that now has a “Personal Choice” feature which can automatically adjust the driver’s seat, side mirrors, lighting, and other accessories to a preferred setting. Also includes a panic button for the first time
- 1997 models receive a slightly redesigned suspension that sheds noticeable weight. A new heavy duty transmission (4T65E-HD) includes a larger torque converter
- In 1998, the non-supercharged engine is dropped, leaving the supercharged engine as the only option
- 1999 is the final year of the Riviera
