- The Roadmaster was Buick’s largest vehicle offering in the 90’s, both in sedan and Estate wagon form. It featured the LT1 V8 and 4L60E automatic transmission from the Corvette
- The motor in the Buick was slightly de-tuned thanks to a different camshaft (designed to improve low end torque) and ECU re-map. It also featured durable cast iron heads (vs the Vette’s aluminum), 2 bolt main bearing caps (vs 4 in the ‘Vette) and intake resonators to reduce noise
- The Corvette’s V8 allowed the Roadmaster to far exceed the top speed rating of its comfort tires, so it had to be limited to 108 MPH. For perspective, the Impala SS (which featured the same engine, no limiter, and shorter 3.08 gearing) could hit 156 MPH – and if it weren’t limited by the driveshaft’s critical resonance at this speed, it could go even faster
- When equipped with the towing package (w/ Class II trailer hitch and transmission cooler), the sedan features a 5,000 tow rating (just like the Estate wagon). However, only the Estate had the option of increasing its towing capacity to 7,000 lbs when using a weight-distributing tow hitch, dual sway controls, 35 PSI rear tire pressure, and disabling the Electronic Level Control system
- A stainless steel dual exhaust system came standard, and a limited slip differential could be optioned
- As it features the Corvette’s LT1, it is open to a vast amount of aftermarket support and performance upgrades. Swapping out the stock 2.93 final drive for a shorter ratio will do wonders for this car’s performance
- First year of GM’s long-life automatic transmission fluid
- New enlarged foldaway style mirrors
- Radio received bigger controls
- The sedan received new body side moldings
- A shade was added to the Vista Roof and cargo cover of the Estate wagons
- The previous year (1994) was the first year of the 4L60E (upgrading from the hydraulic 4L60 of previous years)
- Besides the switch to OBDII, very few changes occurred during its final model year (1996), which include GM’s long life coolant and automatic climate control as a standard feature
