Fast Facts:
- The ’96 Mystic Cobra was the world’s first production vehicle to feature a color-shifting paint finish from the factory. The “Mystic” Cobra featured a highly advanced color-shifting paint job ($815 option) that was formulated by BASF and took a whopping 3 years to develop. The special effect resulted from “ChromaFlair” pigments (from Flex Products) that shifted between green, amber, gold, or purple depending on the viewing angle and lighting
- This special paint has many proprietary uses within Ford, which means the remaining quantity is strictly regulated. If you damage your Mystic Cobra, it must be taken to an approved Ford body shop, who will use your car’s VIN to obtain the exclusive paint. Only 1,999 Mystic Cobras were produced, and all were coupes
- According to Mustang Engine Supervisor John Hasse, developing the new DOHC Cobra engine required nearly 4 years. The engine blocks are imported from Italy, and both the head and block castings are supplied by Texit (a division of Fiat)
- The Cobra’s V8 was produced off-line using a dozen two-member teams. Each team builds one engine from start to finish, and then signs it off. It was a very similar procedure used by Aston Martin, who was owned by Ford at the time
- The engineering team originally considered tubular headers for the Cobra, but testing found that all the tubing shapes that provided meaningful power simply couldn’t bolt on without engine removal. Instead, they used cast iron manifolds that featured high silicon and molybdenum content for durability. The Cobra also employs 6 catalytic converters in its stainless-steel H-pipe dual exhaust system
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the DOHC 4.6 modular V8, replacing the pushrod 5.0 engine
- The following year (1997) had a larger radiator fan and new A/C condenser. The honeycomb grille is deleted to allow more airflow to the radiator. Rear spoiler finally becomes optional (rather than standard)
