Fast Facts:
- The overhead cam 4.6L V8 replaced the infamous pushrod 5.0 in 1996 in order to meet OBD2 requirements
- While the horsepower rating was similar to the old 5.0 model, this new motor was happier at high rpm’s and is more refined, with less NVH
- Featured a deep skirt cast iron block with aluminum heads. The single overhead cam design allows the spark plugs to be located near the center of the combustion chamber to promote a “rapid burn” combustion
- The T-45 manual transmission (shared with the Cobra) was more precise and had better clutch feel than the T-5 transmission it replaced in the earlier 5.0L Mustangs
Key Model Year Changes:
- Horsepower and torque increased to 225hp/290tq (vs 215hp/285tq). This is due to PCM calibration and updated fuel system. SN95
- Borg Warner transferred the rights to the T-45 transmission over to Tremec. So while the transmission itself is unchanged, this is the first year of the “Tremec” T-45 transmission, which lasted until 2001
- The dash clock pod is deleted, and cupholders are added to the center console
- The following year (1999) is the first year of the “New Edge” design Mustangs
