Fast Facts:
  • The bump in the hood has been an Eclipse design trait since it launched in 1990. The bulge exists to accommodate the tall cam gear cover of the 4G63 engine
  • GS-T models were front wheel drive only. The GSX models were AWD, and were not available as a Spyder
  • These cars featured a relatively steep 4.15:1 final drive axle ratio
  • Unlike most cars, the Eclipse was designed as a convertible from the start. Structural enhancements over the coupe include reinforced A pillars, side sills, rear cross brace, and front and rear floor pans. This required the Spyder to have revised spring rates which compensate for different rigidity. The Spyder only weighs 154 lbs more than the coupe
  • The Eclipse features two fluid-filled motor mounts to help absorb unwanted engine vibration
  • The strength of Mitsubishi’s legendary 4G63 engine was somewhat unintentional. When the 4G63 was engineered in the 80’s, carmakers were limited to crude tooling and computer software, which required a lot guesswork before a final product could be developed. So when it came time to build performance engines, engineers had no choice but to overbuild it (if uncertain, make it stronger). This is why the 90’s produced bulletproof blocks like the 4G63 and Toyota’s 2JZ that could withstand 1,000+ whp
  • Today’s computing power allows manufacturers to build engines that are perfectly reliable at stock power levels, and no more. This is why you’ll never see a modern 200hp 4 cylinder engine featuring a rigid solid-deck block, forged steel crank with lots of overlap and journal area, forged steel rods, aluminum pistons with thick ringlands, piston oil squirters, and high flowing heads – all of which you’ll find in the 210hp 4G63
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First and only year of the full black leather interior option (leather wrapped seats with ‘Mitsubishi’ logo embroidery, leather door inserts, and leather center console armrest)
  • First and only year of the white-faced gauges (GSX and GS-T models)
  • No changes were made for the previous year (1998)
  • 1997 was the first year of the mid-cycle facelift, featuring larger front intake openings, increased bulge in the front and rear bumpers, updated side sills, revised headlights with black inner housings and chrome inserts
  • 1999 was the final year of the 3rd gen Eclipse
