2001 bmw M roadster for sale 1
Fast Facts:

  • While the horsepower increase from the previous year was substantial, there was only a modest torque increase (12 ft lbs). In addition, peak torque arrived over 1000 rpm later in the new car (4900 RPM versus 3800 RPM). Since horsepower peaks at a whopping 7400 RPM, both the old and new car feel similar around town. The increased power from the later car can easily be felt at high RPM, however
  • The M coupe and roadster came with a 3.15:1 final drive ratio (vs the M3’s 3.62:1), as well as one less gear (5spd vs the 6spd), and 18 less hp (due to different intake and exhaust packaging)
  • Unlike BMW’s other (aluminum) inline 6 engines, this S54 has a cast iron block. It was stronger (to handle the high RPMs), and allowed close bore spacing, making it compact
  • This engine won “best new engine” category in the International Engine of the Year competition and “Engine of the Year” in 2001
  • BMW engineer Burkhard Göschel wanted to increase the rigidity of roadster by making it into a fixed roof Coupe. The M Coupe almost didn’t make production, had Göschel’s team not convinced the Board of Directors to give it the green light
  • Göschel convinced the Board, saying an M coupe would be cost effective. This was done by ensuring the Coupe shared the interior, doors, fenders, hood, and bumper from the roadster
Key Model Year Changes:

  • First year of the S54 3.2 engine from the M3, giving it 75 horsepower more than last year’s model
  • Dynamic stability control is now standard, replacing Automatic Stability Control plus Traction (ASC+T)
  • First year for Laguna Seca Blue, Steel Grey, and Phoenix Yellow
  • 3.15 differential replaces the previous year’s 3.23 diff
  • Now features tire pressure monitoring
  • Grey faced gauges replaced the previous year’s black faced gauges
  • All M badges now have a curvature, and are no longer flat
  • Chrome shadow finish on the wheels replaces the satin chrome finish of last year’s model
  • The following 2002 model year had virtually no changes, except for a standard CD player replacing the cassette player
