The SL600 was the most expensive and most powerful R129 SL available in the U.S. The SL600 was made in limited numbers. In 2001, for example, only 198 were produced (compared to 3,464 SL 500s)
The M120 V12 is the same powerplant used in the Pagani Zonda as well as the CLK GTR race car. It provides 80% of peak torque at just 1,700 RPM. While V12 powered cars aren’t much faster than the V8 variants, the V12 sets itself apart with a noticeably smoother, turbine-like power delivery and more torque
The SL600 came standard with nearly all available options, such as the full leather package (leather-wrapped door panels/dashboard), extended wood trim, heated seats, and even a dash-mounted hands-free telephone that pops up at the press of a button (hidden) as well as ADS suspension (Adaptive Damping System). Only the SL600 came with a center console that was fully covered in wood trim – the rear portion of the console in the V8 cars was plastic
The AMG body kit ($5,000 option – body kit, wheels, and projector beam fog lights) became standard on 2001 and 2002 models
Key Model Year Changes:
First year to include AMG Sport package as standard
The following year (2002) was the final year of the R129 SL (replaced by the R230 generation)
Very few changes occurred during the final 2 years of production (excluding the Silver Arrow Edition, which received significant interior upgrades in 2002
1999 was the final year of significant changes (larger steering wheel, updated tail lights/ side mirrors, gauge display, body-color door handles, new wood trim colors, etc)
