Fast Facts:
- Sitting underneath the M3, the 330i was the most powerful 3 Series you could buy in 2002. These models feature the same 225hp M54 inline six from the 5 Series (E39 530i) while weighing over 200 lbs less
- The Sport Package (shown here) includes a subtle aerodynamics body kit, sport seats, sport steering wheel, and 18″ wheels
- The all-aluminum M54B30 engine features double-VANOS and a trick twin-chamber intake manifold. The M54B30 made the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list from 2001 to 2003
- Compared to the previous 2.8L M52 inline 6, the new 3.0L M54 has an improved gas flow system that provides better combustion efficiency (better mixing of the fuel/air). This results in smoother low RPM operation. In addition, the M54 revs more eagerly and features a higher redline. The most noticeable benefit of the M54 is the mid-range torque – 85% of max torque is now available between 1500 RPM and 6000 RPM
- A small design detail that made the E46 superior to the previous E36 was the location of the front wheels. The E36 had such poor rear legroom that an improvement was mandatory for the new car – BMW was determined to meet or exceed their rivals in terms of interior space and legroom. The solution was to push the front wheels as far forward as possible (25mm), which provided many benefits
- One benefit is that interior space increased without increasing the overall size of the car, solving the rear legroom dilemma. Second, it allowed the engine to sit farther back, improving steering dynamics and helping the car achieve a 50.1/49.9 distribution
Key Model Year Changes:
- Facelift occurs this year for the sedans and wagons (new headlights, tail lights, grille, hood, etc)
- First year of the optional Bi-Xenon (both low and high beam) headlights. Prior year only had low beam Xenon
- First year of the larger Navigation screen (on cars equipped)
- First year of the standard CD player, replacing the cassette (which is still available as an option)
- The Key Memory system now includes radio presets
- New optional run-flat tires and Flat Tire Monitor on the 330 models
- Minor steering and suspension refinements that enhance handling and road feel
- First year of optional rear-seat side-impact airbags
- Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is updated with Traction Control that is less intrusive during low speeds on extra slippery surfaces
