- The body panels are sheet-molded composite (SMC), similar to the material used on Corvettes to save weight
- Based on the same platform as the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type
- The DOHC 3.9L engine is designed by Jaguar (the AJ-30). The 4.0L installed in the following year was also designed by Jaguar, and was borrowed straight from the XJ and XK model line. Also a DOHC, it had a redline of 7000 RPM
- The hard top featured unique glass windows in the C pillars – a throwback to first generation thunderbird of the 50’s
- Ford Performance Group had plans of introducing a supercharged Thunderbird, using the 390hp supercharged V8 from the Jaguar XJR/XKR (a concept car was built). However, demand for the Thunderbird was so low that the car was axed
- First year of the Thunderbird, which was produced until 2005
- The only notable change was in 2003, when the engine was upgraded to the 4.0L V8 from the Jaguar XJ/XK
- 2003 also saw a new “SelectShift” 5 speed automatic transmission
