Fast Facts:
  • The PT Cruiser GT was America’s attempt at a “premium” hot hatch. The GT’s turbo engine (A855) is nearly identical to the one found in the Dodge Neon SRT-4 (A853), which at the time was the fastest FWD production car in the U.S (and up until the 2017 Civic Type R, was the fastest FWD car that Car and Driver had ever tested)
  • The PT Cruiser’s engine made 15 fewer horsepower than the SRT-4 thanks in part to the awkward shape of the engine bay. The pointy snout required a different intake manifold, intercooler, and turbocharger plumbing for proper packaging
  • The turbo engine is based off the one found in the base PT Cruiser. The performance upgrades include much more than just a turbo: forged connecting rods with cracked caps, hardened crankshaft, improved cooling jackets in the block and head, and piston oil squirters to cool the new Mahle aluminum pistons. The deck and head bolts are thicker, the crankcase webbing is stronger, and a new aluminum oil pan adds rigidity. The cylinder head was updated with larger valves (including Inconel exhaust valves)
  • The low-inertia HMC turbocharger (integrated into the exhaust manifold) provides 14 pounds of boost, bumping the PT Cruiser’s output by 65 horsepower and 83 ft lbs. This was a very torquey motor: peak torque lasted for over 2000 RPM (from 2200 to 4400 RPM) thanks to the turbocharger
  • While the PT Cruiser’s design gets all the attention (good or bad), it’s the cleverly designed interior that deserves praise. The abundant cargo space (120 cubic ft (!) is due to the high roof, removable rear seating, and a front passenger seat that can fold flat
Key Model Year Changes:
  • The front and rear sway bars are updated
  • There is now only one manual external lock on the exterior (driver side door)
  • A facelift didn’t occur until 2006, which included an updated interior and a bump in power to 230hp
  • The GT model is dropped from the model line in 2008
