Fast Facts:
- The Marauder was a Panther platform Grand Marquis stuffed with the SVT Cobra’s DOHC V8. A new frame features straight side rails and thicker crossmembers (it was one of the few body-on-frame cars still in production)
- Tail lights, turn signals, and backup lights are tinted as dark as legally allowed by DOT
- Equipped with high output Cibie 80mm fog lights, Autometer Pro-Comp oil pressure and voltmeter gauges, 140mph speedo and 7,000 RPM tach
- Features specially tuned Tokico nitrogen-filled monotube shocks (mounted outboard in the rear). The new rear suspension actually lifts the rear by about 3/4″ and lowers it .5″ in the front, giving the Marauder a slight rake. The Marauder also rolls on firmer anti-roll-bar bushings in front, stiffer body frame bushings, rear load-leveling air springs, and front springs lifted from the Crown Vic police car
- Out back is a limited slip differential with a 3.55 axle ratio. 3.55 helps with acceleration, but not fuel economy, so Ford’s countermeasure involves keeping the torque converter locked up in 2nd gear
- Seats are upholstered in the same style as the 1963 ½ Marauder. Includes a leather wrapped steering wheel
- The top speed had to be limited to a mere 117 MPH to avoid driveshaft vibration
- The development team was happy to add a supercharger in an effort to revamp interest in the Marauder after its first year. However, Mercury responded by not only cutting funding, it terminated the Marauder altogether after only 2 years of production (due to poor sales)
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the Marauder, which was only produced in 2003 and 2004
- The following year (2004) saw Dark Toreador Red paint, and Light Flint/Dark Charcoal two-tone interior became available
- Traction control and Ford’s Audiophile entertainment system became standard the following year (2004). ’04 also saw the 4R75W four-speed automatic transmission upgraded to improve shift response
