Fast Facts:
- The ZHP package emerged from demand for a 4 door M3. Since the 4 door E46 shares little sheetmetal with the 2 door car (unlike the previous E36), BMW could not justify engineering a 4 door M3 for production due to the extensive exterior/body revisions required to accommodate M3 parts (wheels, etc). Also, since the U.S. was the only market in the world to show demand for a four-door M3, the idea was scrapped
- The solution was to offer a Sport package (known as ZHP) on the 4 door in 2003. The package proved successful enough that it was made available on the coupes and convertibles the following year
- The ZHP sport package offered a few key improvements over the base 3 series, including a cosmetic Mtech-II body kit, bespoke 18″ wheels, an upgraded steering rack (known as a “yellow-tag” or “712” rack), revised ECM, sportier camshafts, a shorter final drive (3.07:1 vs 2.93:1), and a 6spd manual gearbox (vs 5spd on lesser models). Redline is increased from 6500 RPM to 6800 RPM, with slight increases in hp and torque
- Other improvements include unique control arms (shared with the Z4 M) with stronger front ball joints, slightly increased negative camber, and M Sport suspension (.6″ lower ride height)
- While the suspension and steering gear aren’t vastly different from the regular cars, the ZHP manages to improve handling and steering without sacrificing ride comfort (riding much nicer than the M3)
Key Model Year Changes:
- Final year of the ZHP sport package, as well as the E46
- Very few changes occurred this year as BMW shifts focus to the replacement (E90/E92)
- ZHP package was only available on the sedan for 2003. It wasn’t until 2004 that the package became available for all body styles (coupe and convertible)
