Orange peel is caused because the factory  tries to move the cars to the dealerships too soon. The paint isn’t even dry enough to properly inspect its quality. In the 60’s all cars had a show car finish. Your right about one thing, the average person doesn’t even know what orange peel is.
Sanding orange peel isn’t easy, especially if the primer and base coats aren’t perfectly smooth, I mean 1000 grit smooth!
