“VortecMax” trucks utilize the same high-output 6.0L LQ9 V8 found in the Silverado SS and Escalade. Previously referred to as Vortec “High Output”, the name switched to “Vortec Max” in 2005
The VortecMAX performance package (combined with Heavy Duty towing package) is designed to increase the towing capacity to 10,000 lbs on the extended cab (9,900 lbs on the crew cab). This was achieved with the use of a new-for-2006 “super duty” transmission known as the 4L70E, a heavy-duty trailering package, new 9.5″ rear axle (4:10 gears), and an automatic locking differential
The performance-driven LQ9 engine features powdered metal rods and hypereutectic aluminum flat top pistons that provide a 10:1 compression ratio. Hypereutectic pistons feature high silicone content – this adds thermal stability to the alloy, keeping the piston stable through a wide range of temperatures
The LQ9’s real party piece is the heavy-duty cast-iron block. At 216 lbs, it’s 100 lbs heavier than the aluminum LS1 block. The racing industry has consistently proven that the blocks alone can withstand over 1000 horsepower (stock internals can handle around 600hp)
The extra power called for a stronger transmission, but GM did not want to use the larger (and heavier) 4L80E transmission. This is where the newly developed 4L70E comes into play: the 4L70E provided the increased torque capacity needed over the 4L65E without any increase in size (thanks to expensive materials). The 4L70E could also shift at higher engine speeds. This transmission debuted solely on 2006 HD trucks optioned with the VortecMAX performance package (shown here)
