Fast Facts:
  • The Drop Head Coupe (“DHC”, pictured here) was the roadster version of the XK150 featuring a soft top – not be confused with the OTS model, which was a roadster with no top at all. OTS roadsters are significantly lighter, and as a result, hit 60 MPH over a full second faster than the DHC. The OTS was also the fastest model with a 130 MPH top speed (vs ~124 MPH for the DHC and fixed head coupe). Of course, buyers of the OTS model had to forgo the convenience of closed-top motoring during bad weather
  • When launched in 1957, XK150 was actually slower than the XK140 it replaced. However, the deficit was corrected in the spring of 1958 with an optional 3.4-litre “S” engine sporting three 2-inch SU HD8 carburetors and a straight ported cylinder head. This bumped output to 250hp
  • An XK150 with this triple carb “S” engine was tested by British car magazine “The Motor” in 1959. It ended up being the fastest closed car the magazine had ever subjected to a full road test
  • The same road test concluded that the car was capable of a 300 mile range, thanks to a 14 gallon tank and an average of 22 mpg throughout the test. Quite efficient for a 1959 sports car!
  • The XK150 was the first XK to offer disc brakes (by Dunlop). Despite the improved performance and safety, Jaguar gave buyers the option to switch to the old drum brake setup from the XK140
  • When these cars sold new, Jaguar made a request to customers to not exceed 5,000 RPM for any length of time to help prolong engine life. Going against this request really wasn’t in the buyer’s best interests unless they were racing – 5,000 RPM equates to 100 MPH in 4th gear, and nearly 130 MPH in overdrive
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Final year of the 3.4L engine. The following year (1960) came with the 3.8L from the full-size Mark IX sedan, which produced 10 extra hp
  • The aluminum center dash panel is disappears on cars built after June 1958
  • 4 wheel Dunlop disc brakes didn’t appear as an option until the following year (1960). Front disc brakes were standard
  • XK150 production began in 1957 and ended in Oct 1960 as a 1961 model. Very few 1961 cars were built, as Jaguar was making way for the new E-Type
  • Compared to the XK140, the fender line across the door sits much higher on the XK150. Other changes on the 150 include a one piece windscreen (replacing the split screen on 140s). The hood was widened, opened down to the wings, and the bulkhead was moved back 4 inches to make the hood longer (vs the XK140)
  • The dashboard is now trimmed in leather, vs the XK140’s walnut wood trim
  • The optional SE engine (210hp) shared only the short block with the XK140. The top end has a modified cylinder head with larger exhaust valves. Twin 1.75-inch SU HD6 carburetors were fitted as well
  • XK150s were the first XK models to feature disc brakes. XK140s only came with drum brakes
