1982 jeep cj7 for sale 1

Fast Facts:

  • The CJ7 replaced the CJ5 in 1976. The Wrangler (YJ) replaced the CJ7 in 1987, making this the final CJ generation
  • The wheelbase was 10 inches longer than the CJ5. This allowed fitment for the optional new automatic trans all-wheel drive system called Quadra-Trac
  • Unlike the the CJ5, the CJ7 could be ordered with air conditioning, steel doors, and molded plastic top. Combined with more interior space and an automatic transmission, it was much easier to live with day-to-day than the CJ5
  • The CJ7 can easily be distinguished from the CJ5 by the doors. The door opening in the CJ5 had a smaller, rounded opening, while the CJ7 featured a bigger, squared door opening to allow for the new hinged doors
  • The 304 V8 was killed off in 1980 due to stricter emissions requirements
Key Model Year Changes:

  • First year of the Dana 30 front wide track axles
  • First year of the 2-piece AMC 20 wide track rear axles
  • All 1980 and newer CJ7’s came with the excellent Dana 300 transfer case, which was just as compact as the Dana 20 it replaced while having a lower “Low” range of 2.62:1 and a new case design that featured self-contained oil (no longer shared with the transfer case)
  • For 1981 and newer CJ7’s, the 4.2L AMC inline 6 featured AMC Computerized Engine Control (CEC)
  • Also for 1981 and newer CJ’s, the 4.2L saw a respectable weight reduction thanks to an aluminum intake, plastic valve covers, and a change in crankshaft design (switch from a twelve counterweight to a four). The crankshaft redesign alone saved around 20 pounds
