Fast Facts:
- The 3rd gen “A60” Celica (1981-1985) is the final Celica to employ RWD. After August 1985, the Celica is front wheel drive only
- The GT-S (RA65) was the top-of-the-line model (underneath the Supra), featuring bigger 14″wheels, fender flares, independent rear suspension w/ gas filled shocks, and a “sport” interior (sport seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, and leather shift knob
- Most of these GT-S parts came from the Supra, which happens to be based off of the Celica. In fact, both cars are nearly identical from the windshield back (in hatchback form)
- The Celica Supra was the GT version of the Celica, with a stretched wheelbase and unique front facia. Crucially, the Supra comes with a 2.8L inline 6
- On the other hand, the A60 Celica features Toyota’s 22-RE engine (the “E” denotes fuel injection, which was installed in 1982. Prior to that, the engine was simply referred to as the 22-R). This 2.4L goes down as the biggest engine ever offered in a Celica
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the hidden retractable headlights
- Redesigned front grille
- Updated tail lights
- In the following year (1985), the 22-RE engine received a significant redesign. Power was bumped by 11 hp, and torque by 3 ft/lbs (peak torque now occurs 800 RPM later)
- The redesign was significant enough that many parts from the 1985+ 22-RE are not compatible with previous year engines (such as cylinder head, block, pistons, timing chain/cover, etc)
