- This is the final generation Suburban to feature a solid front axle. The following generation (1992) introduced independent front suspension (IFS)
- While IFS has its own benefits, the solid axle setup is more durable than IFS when off-roading thanks to a rigid structure connecting both wheels. Solid axle designs allow torque to transfer through fewer moving parts than IFS, retaining more of the available torque from the differential. Repairs are also easier and cheaper
- Between 1987 and 1991, GM used an “R” and “V” designation instead of the customary “C/K” designation. For example, the truck on this page is considered a V1500. This switch was done to avoid confusion with the other full size “C/K” pickup trucks that were released in 1987
- Equipped with 4WD and the tow package, towing capacity of the V1500 is rated at 6,500 lbs. Gross vehicle rate rating (GVWR) was 7,000 lbs, and max payload was 1,630 lbs

The following year (1991) was the final year of the 7th generation Suburban, which began its 18 yr model run back in 1973. 1991 is the only year of the available 4L80E transmission
