Fast Facts:
- 2001 was the only year you could buy a white Z06. Only 352 Speedway White cars were produced
- The lightweight exhaust system on the Z06 was made of titanium – a first for a production vehicle
- Story has it that the idea for a C5 Z06 came about during the development of the FRC (fixed-roof coupe) sold in 1999 and 2000. The FRC was found to have a 12% stiffer structure than the regular coupe. This 12% bump in stiffness was all that was needed to set off a lightbulb
- During this time, the media and enthusiasts were pressing for a replacement to the record-breaking C4 ZR-1, which ended production in 1995. In addition, David Hill (Corvette’s Chief Engineer) wasn’t totally satisfied with the performance of the base Corvette, which lacked the raw excitement that hardcore drivers were looking for. David Hill was convinced the FRC platform could be used to build a Corvette that exceeded the performance of the ZR-1 while costing substantially less to develop and sell
- The end result was a stiff, lightweight sports car (3,116 lbs – almost 100 lbs less than a Z3 M Coupe) at a price of only $47k (just $7k more than a base Corvette. In comparison, C4 ZR-1’s were selling for ~$75k in the early ’90s)

- The following year (2002) saw a power increase to 405hp
- The increase in power for 2002+ models was achieved by deleting two of the front catalytic converters. The effect was substantial enough to warrant a re-profiled camshaft featuring a .555/.551 lift – the highest ever for a small block Chevy at the time
- Other 2002+ LS6 changes include uprated valve springs, hollow intake valves, and lightweight exhaust valves. These valvetrain upgrades improved the valve seating at high RPM. A new higher flowing MAF sensor was also incorporated, along with a larger air cleaner housing for increased airflow
