- The 2002 Super Duty 7.3L has a max conventional tow rating of 12,500lbs, the highest in its class at the time
- The 7.3L was advanced for its time, featuring forged steel connecting rods, six head bolts per cylinder, and a new HEUI system (hydraulic electronic unit injection) which at the time provided the cleanest emissions ever in a diesel truck. The system relied on highly pressurized engine oil to make the engine run. While complex, this injection setup has proven to be one of the most reliable technologies ever used by Navistar and Ford
- The six head bolt per cylinder arrangement allows the 7.3L to handle well over 40psi of boost before putting the head gasket at any risk
Key Model Year Changes:
- New 6spd manual transmission replaces the old 5spd on 5.4L and 6.8L gasoline engines, on all trim levels
- Improved performance and shift feel on 6.8L gas powered models
- Mono-beam “jewel” headlamps (standard on XLT and Lariat) replace the old “aero” headlamps
- New forward-fold feature on telescoping trailer tow mirrors
- 6-way power passenger’s seat standard on Lariat Crew Cab models
- New seats with increased bolster height and shoulder width on XLT and Lariat. Also, an improved lumbar support system provides a greater range of adjustment
- Map pockets with integrated cup holders on SuperCab rear doors. Driver and passenger side grab handles now standard on all trim levels
- New instrument cluster with std. transmission temp gauge (automatic trans)
- The 7.3L Powerstroke was discontinued mid-2003, replaced with the more emissions compliant 6.0 Powerstroke engine
