Fast Facts:
- The 2nd generation Hilux (RN20, 1972-1978) replaced the RN10 generation that began in 1968. The 2nd gen had a more comfortable interior and updated exterior styling. The 2nd gen also spawned a 7.4 ft long bed option in the U.S, the first appearance of a Toyota “long bed” in North America
- The 20R engine was shared with the Toyota Celica. It featured a very sturdy cast iron block with an aluminum head. It was a rugged powerplant that was reliable and easy to service, and fuel economy was exceptional for a truck at the time
- The SR5 was the top-spec trim, featuring a larger 2.2L engine. A 5sd transmission was available on the SR5 only (vs the 4spd found on base trucks). Final drive is 4.375:1 with the 5spd
- These body-on-frame trucks weigh 2,475 lbs in SR5 short-bed configuration (shown here) and have a maximum payload of 1,400 lbs. The bed features double walled construction for durability
Key Model Year Changes:
- Very few changes occurred for this model year (nothing notable)
- The last major update occurred the year before (1975) when the Hilux received a facelift and additional standard equipment. 1975 is the first year of the SR5 model, as well as the larger 2.2 L 20R engine and a new 5spd manual transmission. Toyota eventually dropped the “Hilux” name in the U.S – the name simply changed to “Truck”. Regardless, all years of this generation are still commonly referred to as “Hilux”
- 4WD models didn’t appear until 1979. Toyota used everything they learned from building Land Cruisers to perfect the truck’s 4WD system
