Fast Facts:
  • The Hurst/Olds was Oldsmobile’s attempt at bringing back their long forgotten performance image. Olds decided to reunite with Hurst (as it did in the 60’s) and sell a “Hurst” edition 442 that sported T-Tops along with the wildest shifter ever found on a production car transmission: the Hurst Triple Shifter, which mimicked the “lightning rod” shifters found on many drag race cars of the time
  • The 5.0L V8 is a genuine Oldsmobile engine produced by the Oldsmobile division – it was not available on any other GM car in 1983. At 180 hp, it had a higher horsepower rating than any car GM offered in ’83, including the Z28 and Trans Am (the 190hp L69 didn’t arrive until the end of ’83 for the Z28/Trans Am)
  • The Olds/Hurst party piece is clearly the Hurst Triple Shifter. When in manual mode, you can only shift gears one at a time (down or up) in sequence. This prevents you from missing a gear – helpful when making quick shifts down a drag strip. It also prevents you from upshifting or downshifting into the wrong gear
  • However, when left in “Drive” or “Overdrive”, the trans will shift like a normal automatic. The transmission itself is a THM-200-4R with a 2400 RPM stall speed converter. Final drive is a 3.73 ratio (LSD optional)
  • The Hurst/Olds also received a handling package consisting of higher-rate front and rear coil springs, firmer shocks, stiffer bushings, and larger sway bars
  • Another unique option was the glass roof T-Tops, which were conventionally found on Corvette/Camaro/Trans Am. The design provides a significantly stiffer “open-air” experience compared to a convertible or Targa top
  • If the buyer opted for the LSD, the car automatically came with “Super Lift” rear shocks. The system allows the driver to raise or lower the rear ride height via an air valve by the fuel filler access door. This was done to maintain the factory ride height, regardless of load
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Built for 1983 and 1984 only. The only difference between the two years is the color scheme. 1983 cars had were a black and silver two-tone (reversed in ’84)
  • 3,500 total were built in 1984, though only 1,500 were optioned in T-Top configuration
