Fast Facts:
- The T package replaced the T-type in 1987. The T-package (Y56) Regal could be had with the Grand National’s engine (LC2 Turbo package). Unlike the Grand National, the Turbo-T wasn’t limited to a black exterior color
- The Turbo package included the Grand National’s Turbo V6, 3.42 Axle, LED tach and boost gauge. The T-Package includes a leather wrapped sport steering wheel, 15×6 aluminum Sport wheels, Eagle GT Blackwall tires, fender badge, and the same “Gran Touring” suspension as the GN (but with a softer tune – the GN’s suspension was performance tuned and stiffer)
- 1987 was the first and only year that Buick customers could mix and match Grand National parts with different Regal models. This meant that a Regal “Limited”, which can be had with all of Buick’s luxury options (plush velour bench seating, pillows, column shift, wood/chrome interior trim, vinyl landau roof, hood ornament etc) could be ordered with the engine, “Turbo” bulge hood, and black-out trim of the Grand National (a column shift with a Turbo Buick V6? The Regal Limited was one of the greatest “sleepers” the auto industry had ever seen)
- Despite the turbo power, this car only came with an 85 MPH speedometer. Back in 1979, the NHTSA passed a bill saying that the speedo on all cars cannot read more than 85 MPH. This was in response to the U.S energy crisis (slow cars down and save gas). It wasn’t very effective, and was repealed a year later
- However, rather than spend money changing the dashboards on every car again, most car makers just left the 85 speedo in place until the next model redesign. Since an all-new Regal wouldn’t occur until 1988, it meant that the GNX, Grand National, and the rest of the turbo Buick lineup had 85 MPH speedometers
Key Model Year Changes:
- Final year of the RWD Regal (the following year was redesigned, and switched to FWD)
- The T-Type model from the previous year is dropped, replaced with the T-Package. The Turbo package and Exterior Sport Package became available as standalone options (The Turbo pack requires the T-package)
- This meant that Regal Limited’s could be fitted with the Grand National’s LC2 engine
- The Turbo engine (referred to as “LC2”) had its engine management reprogrammed for a slight increase in power to 245hp and 355 ft/lbs torque (vs last years 235hp/330 ft lbs)
- The grille was redesigned with more spacing between the bars
- New interior trim plate
- Plastisol paint protection added (this was GM’s PVC coating (rough texture) that protected against paint chip damage)
- Only year for the WE4 option ($3,295). The wheels, bumper supports, and rear drum brakes are aluminum on WE4’s (vs steel on the Grand National) making the WE4 lighter than the GN, and therefore faster. Only 1,547 made
