- The final year of the iconic El Camino, which began production in 1959
- An El Camino “SS” was available from 1984-1987 through a joint venture between GM and Choo Choo Customs in Tennessee. These cars received a Monte Carlo SS front clip, but did not receive any performance upgrades. They came only with the factory supplied 305
- The base engine was the relatively new 4.3L V6, which made almost the same power as the V8 (145hp/225 ft lbs). This V6 was based off the 350 and would continue production until 2014, making it one of the longest running production engines in Chevrolet’s history
- Considering it was marketed as part coupe, part truck, Chevrolet had to put some effort in earning the “half truck” title – they gave the El Co a set of air adjustable shocks in the rear as standard, double wall construction in the bed, a 1250lb payload capacity, and a surprising 6000 lb towing capacity
- 1985-1987 are grouped together, as no notable changes would occur after 1985 (when production switched to Mexico, to save cost)
- Also in 1985, the 4.3 V6 emerged as the base engine, alongside the 305 V8
- The El Camino quietly ended production in 1987
