Fast Facts:
- The Capri was designed to compete with Mazda’s market-dominating Miata. While it only features FWD compared to the Miata’s RWD, the Capri (in XR2 form) is equipped with a turbocharger, an intercooler, and can seat four
- Ironically, the XR2 shares many of its parts with Mazda’s own rally-derived 323 GTX, including the 323’s engine, FWD transaxle, steering, suspension, and brake systems. Ford was able to convince Mazda that the Capri was distinct enough from the Miata to not be a direct competitor and that Mazda would profit from the partnership regardless
- Development started in the early ’80s when Ford commissioned their Australian division to build a small front-wheel drive roadster based on the Mercury Tracer (Australia’s Ford Laser). The Australians enlisted the help of Ford’s own Italian “Ghia” design studio to design the coachwork, and a second Italian firm (Ital Design) was hired to complete the engineering, interior, and folding roof. The Capri was fully assembled in Australia
- Naturally, the 3rd gen Capri was one of the few standalone “Mercury” models to not sell alongside a Ford twin
- The Capri had many of the right ingredients to be successful (4-wheel disc brakes, front/rear independent suspension, high-revving turbocharged twin-cam engine, sport suspension, and an MSRP thousands of dollars cheaper than the Miata). Unfortunately, the FWD layout made it less of a driver’s car, and the cargo-friendly interior design meant for awkward exterior proportions
- That being said, luggage capacity was far superior to the Miata’s. The rear seats in the Capri can actually fold down to offer 8.6 cubic feet of cargo area
- While all Capri’s were convertibles, Mercury offered a $1,200 factory hardtop option (shown here) that consisted of a removable steel hardtop, a rolling storage cart, and a cover. The steel hardtop was actually strong enough to pass government crash standards, and it even came equipped with a window defogger
