Fast Facts:
  • The chassis of the 964 was derived from the legendary 959 super car
  • The 911’s iconic automatic rear spoiler was introduced in this generation, and is still used on modern 911’s. In fact, the 964 was 87% new compared to the previous generation. As such, there were many “firsts” with the 964: it was the first 911 with optional AWD, airbags, dual mass flywheel, wheel well liners, the first 911 to feature a check engine light, and more. It was also the first 911 to offer an automatic transmission in nearly 10 years (Tiptronic)
  • The engine in the early 964’s (build date before November 1990) intentionally came with no head gasket. While the older 930 Turbos and 3.2 Carrera’s didn’t come with one either, they didn’t carry the oil leak reputation that the 964 did. The design actually worked perfectly fine. However, the bores in those engines were smaller, and sealing pressure across the surface was uniformly higher. Also, the 3.2’s had a lower compression (9.2:1 vs 11.5:1 in the 964). This meant more force was trying to separate the 3.6 block from its head, increasing the chance of oil seeping through
  • The bigger bores on the 3.6 also meant the head studs were further apart, and the mating surface was narrower. After constant exposure to combustion pressure and heat expansion, the heads would begin to “bow” upward from their mating surface, allowing oil to leak through. Left untouched, the leaking oil would eventually “chafe” the cylinders, making the leak worse
  • By the 1991 model year, Porsche acknowledged the leaking problem and redesigned the heads, cylinders, and pistons to accommodate head gaskets. This change occurred around the Nov 1990 production (1991 model cars – specifically, MT cars with engine serial number 62 M06836 and higher)
  • The reality is that 964’s built before this date can be retrofitted. Unfortunately, it requires extensive modification (machining the cylinder head, new cylinders, new pistons). The parts alone retail for almost $6,000 new from Porsche, but buying used will save some coin
  • There were a few other issues found on early cars (premature dual-mass flywheel failure, non-vented distributor, etc). For this reason, 1993 and later 964s are the most sought after, especially since those years had the lowest production numbers
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First year of R-134a refrigerant, replacing R12 freon
  • New ATE Type 200 (Blue) DOT 4 brake fluid is now used by the factory, providing higher boiling points and longer change intervals
  • Half way through the model year, all Porsche engines made the switch to synthetic motor oil (5W-40) from mineral based oil
  • Very few changes occurred for the 1993 and 1994 model years, as Porsche was focused on the launch of the new 993
