Fast Facts:
- While it isn’t obvious to the eye, 90% of the parts used on the 2nd generation LS400 (1995-1999) were either new or redesigned from the first generation. The wheelbase was increased by 35mm, and rear leg room was increased by 66mm thanks to clever interior re-packaging. The new body lines produced a slippery 0.28 cd – best in class
- The 1UZ-FE 4.0L V8 was the result of 973 prototypes produced during testing. The aluminum block employs cast iron cylinder liners for durability, and the crankshaft is supported by five main bearings for strength. This is the world’s first production engine to use aluminum hydraulic cam followers, reducing inertia and providing a smooth running valvetrain
- The engine is suspended on hydro-pneumatic mounts to eliminate drivetrain harmonics. The mounts angle the engine a few degrees backwards to ensure the 2-piece driveshaft is laser straight. This reduces the chance of driveline vibration (from a 2 pc shaft)
- Up to 10 different hides are used throughout the interior, and two years were spent finding the right grain, texture, and tanning procedures for the leather. Piano builders from Yamaha were tasked with perfecting the wood finish throughout the cabin
- The seats were composed of the world’s first chair suspension system, composed of coil springs, torsion springs, and anti-roll bars (much like a chassis setup). This maximizes comfort and lateral support for the passenger under varying road conditions and g-forces
- The LS400 even features a hydraulically-damped cup holder that opens at the same rate as the ash tray and coin slot covers – all in the name of consistency
- To ensure the smoothest shifts possible, the transmission’s ECU commands the engine’s ECU to retard the timing right before a gearchange occurs. The momentary reduction in torque allows the transmission to shift almost imperceptibly. In addition, the internal clutches are designed to engage the minimum amount of force needed to ensure a smooth transmission between gears
- An LS400 requires 300 more inspection stages than any other Toyota vehicle. This attention to detail was enough to earn the Tahara assembly plant recognition as “the most fault-free production facility in the world”
- The LS400 was the first production car assembled using laser welding – this permits five steel sheets of varying gauge to be welded and pressed as a single piece. This means the door jamb of an LS400 lacks the unattractive weld creases that are normally found on period passenger cars
- While perfect panel gaps are an expected feat for this car, Lexus takes it a step further by ensuring the gap between the hood/fenders and quarters/trunk are not 100% parallel. This was to account for perspective: when viewing the car straight on from the front or rear, the ever so slightly tapered gaps appear more parallel than if the gaps were 100% parallel (meaning, the gap between hood and fender is slightly wider at the rear of the hood than at the front)
Key Model Year Changes:
- 1996 was essentially a carryover from 1995
- A diagnostic function was added for the EVAP system
- Cruise control system is updated
- The previous year (1995) was the first year of the 2nd generation. Many improvements occurred: a new gated shifter, more power, reduced weight, revised transmission (better torque converter and revised gearing), and more
- Notable changes didn’t occur until 1998 when the LS400 saw a minor facelift and a 30hp bump (variable valve timing). A complete list of model year changes can be found here
