Fast Facts:
  • Buyers could choose between the base V6 Firebird, the top of the line V8 Trans Am, or the “sleeper” V8 Formula. The Formula lacked the aggressive body kit of the Trans Am (saving almost 50 lbs) and looked virtually identical to the V6 Firebird. The infamous WS6 option was merely a performance package that could be had with either V8 model
  • The WS6 option ($2,995) includes Ram Air induction, which bumps the horsepower from 285 to 305 and torque from 325 to 335 ft lbs
  • The WS6 package added a Ram Air intake and twin induction nostrils to the hood. This composite hood was one of the wildest hoods ever installed on a production car
  • The WS6 also includes the 1LE suspension package (beefier front and rear anti-roll bars as well as stiffer springs/shocks/bushings). It was the same 1LE package offered on the Camaro except for the shocks: the WS6 received De Carbon shocks with unique valving, while the Camaro received Koni shocks
  • Firmer transmission mounts, 17″ wheels and 245mm tires were also included
  • The Ram Air induction system was built by SLP, who was contracted out by GM
  • The front fenders on these cars are plastic, for weight savings
  • WS6 cars receive unique rocker panels, modified C pillars, and smoothed out side scoops
  • The known LT1 ignition problems were virtually eliminated in 1994 (1995 for F-bodies) when GM re-designed the Opti-spark distributor
Key Model Year Changes:
  • New dual catalytic-converter exhaust system raises horsepower to 285
  • First year of OBD-II
  • First year of the available WS6 performance package w/ Ram Air induction hood, but only on coupes. The option wasn’t available on convertibles until the following year
  • The previous year (1995) was the first year of the newly designed (vented) Opti-Spark distributor, addressing a common problem that plagued all LT-1 engines of years past
  • The following year (1997) saw daytime running lights, a digital odometer, and polished 5 spoke wheels (vs the silver painted finish of 1996)
