Fast Facts:
  • As a small horsepower war began to rage between the Big Three in the 90’s, Dodge made an effort to revamp the R/T badge on nearly all of its models. Everything from the Neon and Intrepid to Durango and Dakota was to receive an R/T badge
  • Rather than develop an entirely new engine, Dodge took the biggest gas engine from the Ram truck line (5.9L Magnum V8) and install it in the Durango, Dakota, and Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The Dakota was the lightest of the three
  • The 5.9L Magnum, known as the “360” V8 for its 360ci displacement, uses forged steel connecting rods and aluminum hyper-eutectic pistons. It receives a slight power bump thanks to computer re-programming and a high-flow exhaust system. The transmission is a heavy-duty 46RE 4spd automatic
  • While the R/T could be had as either a regular cab (shown here) or an extended Club Cab, it was only available with the 6.5 ft bed
  • The R/T was more than just a standard Dakota with a big engine. The R/T package includes special wheel flares, a 3.91 “Sure-grip” limited slip, 19mm lowered ride height, thicker front and rear sway bars, quicker steering gear, upgraded brakes, performance high-flow exhaust, and fat 255/55R17 Goodyears wrapped around aluminum wheels
  • Unfortunately, the lowered suspension reduces the towing capacity to 2,000 lbs
  • Period road tests reveal the R/T seems to be electronically restricted at WOT, as if Dodge implemented some sort of safety measure for the drivetrain. Mopar responded in 1999 by offering an ECU upgrade in their performance parts catalog, presumably one that softens these restrictions. The aftermarket provides plenty of options as well
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First year of the R/T
  • The following year (1999) sees a one-touch-down power driver’s window and an updated overhead console. The pull-knob headlight switch is updated to a rotary-style switch
  • 2001 models see a re-design of the dashboard and center console. New garage door opener feature is standard
  • Chrome wheels become available on 2002 onwards
  • In late ’03 it became its own trim (no longer was R/T just an option package). A ground effects kit became available as well
  • 2003 is the final year of production. There was no need to offer a replacement, as the Viper-powered SRT-10 Ram launches the following year to fill the niche
