Fast Facts:
- Famously described by Popular Science as the “biggest sport utility on the planet”, the Excursion was built alongside the Super Duty truck at Ford’s Kentucky plant, sharing many parts with the 8ft bed F-250 pickup (same width, wheelbase, track width, front suspension and steering gear). However, the entire frame, starting from the front sway bar and back, is taller and much wider in the Excursion than in the F-250
- All Excursions featured a Sterling 10.5 axle. The 4WD models came with a NV273 transfer case and Dana 50 front axle. The only gear ratio options were a 3.73:1 and 4.30:1
- The Navistar-built 7.3L Powerstroke V8 increased the Excursion’s curb weight to 7,700lbs. It gave it a GVWR of 9,200 lb (making it exempt from EPA ratings) and an 11,000 lb towing capacity. A 44 gallon fuel tank was standard
- The Excursion was so large that Federal law required it to have what Ford calls a “Blocker Beam”. During development, Ford realized the Excursion would literally drive on top of other cars during a head-on collision (it drove right up the windshield of a Taurus during testing). To address this safety hazard, Ford designed and installed a steel “Blocker Beam” that mounted behind and below the front bumper. This beam essentially lowers the effective ground clearance of the Excursion, causing it to “push” a car during a head-on collision rather than drive over it
- But then Ford realized the same thing could happen at the rear. Rather than design another beam (and add all that weight) Ford simply made the tow hitch a standard option on all Excursions. The tow hitch served the same function as the Blocker Beam, preventing incoming cars from sliding underneath the rear of the Excursion
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the Excursion, which featured minimal changes during its 5 year life span
- Turbodiesels of the following year (2001) gained 15hp. Fog lamps are now standard on the Limited. Mirrors now contained built-in turn signals (Limited)
- In 2002, the instrument panel was revised, and the analog odometer was upgraded to a digital one. Power-adjustable brake and throttle pedals are now standard on the Limited/Ultimate (and optional everywhere else). The Ultimate included a seat/pedal combo memory feature. New An optional rear-seat video entertainment system w/ VCR and wireless headphones (DVD system arrived later in the 2002 MY. New in-dash six-CD changer option
- In mid 2003, Ford introduced the 6.0 Powerstroke option, which was paired with a new 5-speed 5R110W automatic (vs the 4-speed 4R100 automatic used in previous years). 2003 also switched to a less soft, more durable seat leather, as well as painted bumpers
- In 2005, it received the updated 3 bar chrome grille from the F250
