Fast Facts:
  • The GranSport was nearly $20k more than the base car and was only available as a Cambiocorsa (F1 paddle shift). The Cambiocorsa (meaning “race change”) uses the same 6spd manual transmission found in the Coupe GT, but without a gated shifter or clutch pedal. It is operated hydraulically and controlled electronically via F1 paddles behind the steering wheel and a motor that controls the clutch. This system is similar to the one found in Ferraris of the same era, but with slightly softer shift tuning (shifts aren’t as brutal)
  • The reason a gated 6spd wasn’t offered was because of the GranSport’s unique sport seats. The heavily bolstered chairs forced Maserati to adapt a smaller center console (as well as revised door panels). The new console not only lacks the space for a gated shifter, but it also lacks the space for the full-color display screen found on the base car
  • The transmission is mounted in the rear as a transaxle, providing the Coupe with an ideal weight distribution of 48% front and 52% rear
  • Besides the obvious cosmetic upgrades, the GS gets a 10hp bump thanks to a new exhaust system, revised intake manifolds, and new valve seats. The F1 paddle system is tuned for quicker shifts (35% faster – 18 milliseconds). The exhaust features bypass valves that are programmed to emit a “growl” upon start-up and during full throttle
  • The slightly higher top speed (180mph vs 177mph) was mainly due to a taller sixth gear ratio and exterior aerodynamics (reduced the drag coefficient by 0.02 to 0.33, while also reducing lift by 12%)
  • The F136R V8 is built by Ferrari and is closely related to the V8 found in Ferrari’s F430. The F136R employs a cross-plane crankshaft and a dry-sump oil system with an externally mounted pump. The 32-valve quad-cam V8 has a 7600 RPM redline and relies on chain-driven camshafts that can actuate the valves in less than 0.15 seconds (the intake cams feature variable valve timing). The block and heads are made of an aluminum/silicon alloy, contributing to a total engine weight of only 406 lbs
  • While it’s similar to the base engine, the GS powerplant is carefully assembled and blueprinted to stricter standards and tighter tolerances. The result is reduced friction, which contributes to the 10hp bump over the base engine
  • The GranSport sits 10 mm lower than the base car, and the shocks are tuned to limit pitch and roll. The new suspension increases lateral grip by 10% and reduces understeer
Key Model Year Changes:
  • Final year of the Maserati Spyder/Coupe. Replaced by the Gran Turismo in 2007
  • The GranSport was only produced in 2005 and 2006, with no notable changes between the two years
