Fast Facts:
- Compared to the 2.8L V6 used in the A4, the S4 uses a slightly smaller 2.7L V6. This is due to smaller bores from increasing cylinder wall thickness to handle turbo boost
- Max torque (258 lb ft) is available from 1850 rpm to 4000 rpm, and is a completely flat torque curve. Audi offered this same engine in the A6 2.7T
- The Bi-Turbo DOHC V6 has 5 valves per cylinder (total 30 valves). It utilizes a cast iron block, forged steel crank, and a variable geometry composite intake manifold. Magazines claim 350 hp is a simple chip and exhaust system upgrade away, although this will shorten the life of the factory turbos
- Two parallel water-cooled BorgWarner K03 series turbochargers provide up to 11 psi of boost. Two side mounted air-to-air intercoolers cool the incoming charged air
- The 6spd manual gearbox doesn’t have a 1:1 direct drive, unlike the automatic trans (4th gear). In the manual gearbox, 3rd gear is 1.231:1, 4th gear is 0.967:1, 5th is 0.806:1, and 6th is 0.684:1. A steep 4.111:1 axle ratio provides an engaging driving experience
- The control arms feature Audi’s patented hydraulically damped pivot bearings
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the B5 S4 (produced between 2000 and 2002)
- The following year (2001) received aluminum mirrors with the sport package, ESP (traction control), and upgraded tires. The Avant became available as well
- The significant changes occurred with the 2001.5 models
- The 2001.5 S4’s feature larger oil inlet lines to the turbo (increasing lubrication and improving reliability), revised throttle body boot, and the problematic F shaped hose is no longer used
