  • The Viper’s intake system receives air from NACA ducts in the hood, which were located in a great place for air induction (high pressure zone). However, it was also a great place for rainwater to get in. As a solution, Dodge designed a water separator in the intake (similar to the baffles of a muffler – see last pic). The incoming air can maneuver through the baffles easily, while any water will ram straight into the baffles (like sound waves). The trapped water is collected and drained downward, where the weight of it forces a trap door to open. As the water escapes, the trap door closes once the weight of the water disappears, keeping outside air from entering
  • Dodge faced many issues early on surrounding the side exit exhaust. During press events, smoke would begin emitting from the sides of the prototype cars during hot laps (the exhaust pipes were burning the plastic door sills). To try and prevent the journalists from noticing, Bob Lutz (the guy driving) had one of the Viper team members (Sjoberg) run into the nearest tent and grab two pitchers of water from the buffet table to pour over the smoke until it stopped. It was decided at this point to manufacturer the doors sills out of aluminum instead, as well as insulate the pipes from their surroundings with Nomex
  • 1996 EPA requirements mandated an 02 sensor after the catalytic converter. Unfortunately, the cats in the Viper are stuffed in the side exhaust pipes with the mufflers. There was no 02 sensor available that could handle the 1000 degree heat from the cats and also be waterproof (the side pipes are exposed to rain). This meant that after 1996, all Gen2 Vipers had to have rear exit exhaust. However, the catalysts were still mounted under the door sills, so it was still possible for passengers to burn their legs
  • The rear exit exhaust allowed free-flowing mufflers, reducing the back pressure found on the side exit setup. This boosted horsepower to 415 and torque to 488 lb ft on 1996+ models. It also changed the exhaust note
  • For the new Gen 3 Viper in 2003, modern technology meant there was now a waterproof 02 sensor that could handle high temps from the cats, so the side exit exhaust made a return. Electronic noise-canceling mufflers enabled the Gen 3 to meet EPA sound limits, despite having such a short exhaust length
Key Model Year Changes:
  • The final year with no ABS. The following year (2001) 4-wheel ABS became standard
  • Steel Grey Paint (PS6) is introduced as a one year only option
  • The V10 switches to lighter hypereutectic pistons. While these pistons provided less expansion, the forged pistons of the earlier models were preferred by customers for boosted aftermarket packages
  • Gussets with rivets are added to the frame near the steering box, strengthening a known weak point in the factory frame. TSB recalls (998 and 999) required dealers to offer this frame repair to owners of 1996 thru 1999 Vipers
  • Besides ABS and new paint colors, there were no further changes to the GTS Viper until the 2003 3rd gen
