Fast Facts:
  • The 3500 (shown here) could only be had with dual rear wheels (DRW). Paired with the HO Cummins Turbodiesel, Rams in this configuration are rated to tow 15,150 lbs and have a GCWR of 21,500 lbs
  • For the 2001 MY, two diesel engines were available – a 235 hp/460 lb-ft engine or a high output 245 hp unit with a 17:1 compression ratio (shown here). The more powerful 245 hp engines could only be had with the 6spd manual
  • Released in 1984, the original Cummins 6BT 12 valve engine was intended for industrial vehicles like tractors and cranes. It featured a heavy-duty iron block with a 4.02″ bore and a massive 4.72″ stroke to boost low-end torque. Other features include a steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, a 17:1 compression ratio, an aluminum intake manifold, and direct injection. Total weight with the turbocharger is 1,100 lbs (dry)
  • The inline cylinder layout has some advantages over the V8 competition. By design, an inline is less complex than a “V” engine of the same cylinder count (ie, one exhaust manifold instead of two, etc). The fact that it features two fewer cylinders means the Cummins engine contains about 40% fewer parts than its V8 competitors. Fewer working parts mean lower maintenance costs. Durability was by far the defining trait of a 24-valve Cummins: engines can easily go 300,000+ miles between rebuilds
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First and only year of the 245hp High Output Cummins engine (forged aluminum pistons, higher pressure injection pump + higher flowing injectors)
  • First year of electronic cruise control (for the manual trans Diesel trucks)
  • Four-wheel ABS is now standard (includes two-piston rear calipers and electronic variable brake proportioning)
  • The back cab panels now feature child seat anchors
  • The following year (2001) had major updates to the turbodiesel engine, including a new engine block. Torque jumps to 555 ft lbs
