Fast Facts:
- The F-150 Lightning is a 150 mph truck that can tow 5,000 lbs and haul 1,350 lbs of payload
- In 2003, a Lightning hit almost 148 MPH in testing, setting a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Fastest Production Pickup Truck”. The title was short-lived, however, as the Viper SRT-10 Ram truck was released the following year
- The supercharged 5.4L Triton V8, designed by Roush and Ford’s SVT, featured low compression forged pistons, forged rods, and a forged crankshaft. It is paired with a water-to-air intercooler and an Eaton Roots-type supercharger
- The transmission was a modified 4R100 4spd automatic straight from the HD Super Duty truck line
- Being a truck, the Lightning had only 43% of its weight biased toward the rear. Period road testers admitted that launching a Lightning out of the hole was a bit tricky: “Best performance comes by idling off the line and gently feeding in throttle until past 4000 RPM. Too much throttle and the Goodyears spin furiously; too little and its transmission upshifts prematurely.”
- Despite the disadvantage, the 4,700 lb Lightning could outrun a Mustang GT of the same year from 0-60, clocking a time as low as 5.2 seconds. In fact, the Lightning has enough power (and gearing) to push through the quarter mile at 13.8 seconds @ 104 MPH – faster than the same year SVT Cobra
Key Model Year Changes:
- 2001 is the first year of major revisions
- Power is increased from from 360hp/440tq to 380hp/450tq thanks to a 10mm larger MAF, enlarged intake opening in the wheel well, and a higher flowing intake manifold
- First year of the 3.73 rear axle (vs 3.55 in the previous year). Combined with the power bump, 2001-2004 Lightnings are noticeably faster than pre-2001 trucks
- First year of the aluminum driveshaft, which is lighter than the previous steel unit despite featuring a large diameter (4.5″ vs the old 3.5″ steel unit)
- New generation Goodyear F1 GS tires increase grip
- Shocks are now Bilstein (vs Monroe on the older trucks)
- First year of the redesigned intercooler that is no longer prone to leaking (previously a recall)
- In 2003, the cylinder heads were redesigned with additional spark plug threads to alleviate the risk of spark plugs becoming unseated and popping out (common on all Ford Modular engines of the era)
- 2004 was the final year of the Lightning
