Fast Facts:
  • The “Xtreme” model was essentially the “SS” trim of the Blazer (in fact, it replaced the SS trim option in 1999
  • While the “Xtreme” did not add any power, it featured a low riding sport suspension (Z87) to improve the handling. The “Xtreme” concept was on par with what Toyota was doing with their “X-Runner” Tacoma)
  • The Xtreme option included an aggressive body kit with fog lamps, deep-dish aluminum wheels with low profile tires, leather-wrapped steering wheel, deep tint windows, and heavy-duty weight distributing platform hitch (towing capacity is 2,000 lbs)
  • Xtreme models came standard with a 5spd manual transmission (as did all 2dr Blazers). However, these trucks were rarely purchased without the optional automatic
  • The Blazer is based on the S-10 truck chassis, shared with the GMC Jimmy. This is a steel ladder style frame that is almost entirely boxed
  • This generation Blazer was one of the few vehicles on the market that could still be ordered with unpainted bumpers and exposed steel wheels (rare). This is also the first generation Blazer to drop the S-10 badging
  • The top engine option for the Blazer was the 4.3L Vortec V6 (standard on the Xtreme). Key traits of Vortec engines include sequential fuel injection, optimally designed intake runners and ports for maximum airflow, and a “fast burn” combustion chamber design that swirls the air/fuel mixture together for a more efficient burn
Key Model Year Changes:
  • The shifter is now floor mounted (vs on the steering column)
  • First year of the optional stripe package
  • Very few changes occurred for the 2002 MY
  • The following year (2003) sees new seat fabric as well as an updated fuel injection system for the V6. ’03 is the first year of the Flame/heat decal (Xtreme only)
  • The Xtreme trim began in 2001 and lasted until 2004. No changes occurred for the Xtreme in 2004
