Fast Facts:
  • This is the first 911 Turbo to employ two turbochargers (all previous models were single turbo). This is also the first Turbo to receive 4WD, which was rear-wheel biased (80% of power is sent to the rear wheels)
  • The Turbo’s engine is nearly identical to the one used in the base 911 (minus the turbos). The only differences are a lower compression ratio, strengthened connecting rods, and improved engine cooling
  • When released in 1996 on U.S shores, this was the fastest accelerating production car you could buy. The only other new car on the market with a faster 0-60 time was the $815k McLaren F1 (~3.2 sec)
  • While brutal acceleration was the Turbo’s party piece, the brakes were just as spectacular. Porsche literature of the period claims the braking system produced the equivalent of 1,941 brake horsepower – nearly five times more than what the engine produces (this was calculated during braking from 180 MPH w/ driver). The Turbo can reach a dead stop from 62 MPH in 2.61 seconds. It was the first car in Motor Trend’s history that could brake from 60 to 0 in under 100 feet
  • While the “Turbo Twist” wheels are taken for granted today, these were highly advanced wheels for their time. The hollow, ultra-lightweight 2 piece wheels (friction welded together) were specifically developed for the Turbo
  • Buyers who wanted even more power could choose the Turbo “S”. This bumped output to 450hp via larger turbos, an extra oil cooler, and a revised engine management system. The Turbo “S” also came with a quad outlet exhaust system, larger whale tail, yellow brake calipers, and carbon fiber interior trim
  • This is the first Turbo model to receive hydraulic lifters, eliminating the need for routine valve lash adjustment (required on previous models)
  • The 993 is the first generation of Porsche 911 to utilize soy-based wiring. This was done as a cost-effective measure, as well as a benefit to the environment (most manufacturers began doing this). However, this type of wiring came with several problems, most notably the fact that soy attracts rodents, who eat away at the insulation. Soy can also erode away easily. The harness in these cars have been known to cause unusual running and/or instrumentation display malfunctions
Key Model Year Changes:
  • First year of the illuminated ignition switch
  • First year of the available Turbo “S” from Porsche’s Exclusive department
  • 1997 featured minimal changes
  • The Turbo was sold in the U.S between 1996 and 1998, featuring minimal changes between the model years
