Fast Facts:
- The Carrera 4S (C4S) was the only “S” model of the 996 generation (there was no 2WD version). The C4S replaced the Carrera 4 in 2002
- The Carrera 4S uses the same engine as the base 911, and makes the same exact power (just as the 993 “S” was no more powerful than the base 993). It wasn’t until the 997 generation when the 911 “S” models made more power than the base 911
- The C4S wasn’t simply a “modified” base Carrera – it was more of a 911 Turbo with the turbos removed (it was the 996 “Turbo-look”). It featured the Turbo model’s brakes, suspension, and rear-biased AWD system. The Turbo widebody quarter panels are used, but there are no air ducts (leaving a clean shape). The widebody panels were required to fit the Turbo’s 295mm tires, and while the bigger 11″ wheels look the part, they aren’t the same hollow spoke wheels found on the Turbo model
- The result is that the C4S drives and handles like a Turbo with 100 less horsepower. Unfortunately, the Turbo upgrades make the C4S 143 lbs heavier than the equally powerful base 911. Despite the disadvantage, Porsche quoted a 0.1 second faster to 0-60 time in the C4S than in the base Carrera
- Arguably the coolest feature of the C4S was the reflective red band running across the back, connecting the rear tail lights. This was a neat throw back to the air-cooled generation, and it truly sets the C4S apart from the other 911s. Even the Turbo didn’t receive this touch
- The headlights of the 996 have always been a controversial design feature. Fast forward 25 years, and it’s less of an eyesore considering the wild headlight designs we’ve grown accustomed to on modern cars. However, the 996 was released at a time when automotive headlight design was still underdeveloped and primitive (pop-ups were still in production). This meant the 996 stood out like an alien
- Harm Lagaay, Director of ‘Style Porsche’ from 1989 to 2004, said the headlight design was the result of development requirements. Porsche insisted the headlights have five functions: main beam, running lights, parking lights, fog lights and indicators. There should be no visible mounting hardware as well
- That means the headlights were responsible for all of the 911’s frontal lighting. Cramming all this 90’s tech (which wasn’t compact) into a single light fixture meant that an awkward headlight design was inevitable. Even the people at Porsche were divided by the result – so much so that the accessory department began offering headlight covers to dealers immediately after the launch of the car in ’97. The covers were intended to fit over the headlight and mimic the look of the previous gen 993
Key Model Year Changes:
- First year of the C4S and 3.6L engine
- X51 package became available (again)
- The following year (2003) saw a 5hp increase, updated air bags, new optical data communication bus, and more. Climate control now connected to the sun sensor. Internal hatch release added to luggage compartment for safety reasons. Other minor changes occurred in 2003
- 2004 was the first and only year of the C4S Cabriolet
- 2004 models saw only minor changes, such as updated Bose sound system and PCM software, updated ignition switch, new 80 amp/hr battery, and updated ABS system (5.7)
- 2004 is the final year of the 996 generation 911, although there were a few cars that sold as 2005 models in the U.S
