A Dinan S3-R M3 retailed for around $100k MSRP when new and was the most powerful and most expensive package offered by Dinan for the E46 M3. The full upgrade includes engine, brake, and chassis modifications, as well as a 3.91 limited-slip differential (vs the stock 3.46:1 diff)
Equipped with a supercharger and intercooler (which cost $18k alone) power is bumped from 333hp to 462hp. Torque increases from 262hp to 328hp, and while peak torque doesn’t arrive until 5500 RPM (vs 4900 on the base car), the torque is plentiful throughout the entire rev range. The package includes upgraded injectors, intake/exhaust, and more
Dinan also raised the rev limiter past 8000 RPM to avoid the need for a 2-3 shift before 60 MPH. The S54 engine is more than capable of handling the extra RPM
The suspension is addressed with Dinan/JRZ adjustable shocks, performance springs, adjustable front sway bar, negative camber plates, and special bushings that limit toe deflection. “Surprisingly, the ride comfort is, if anything, better than in the stock car,”Car and Driver stated. “It swallows surface imperfections with well-mannered gulps.”
The brakes are upgraded to 15″ Brembo rotors and four-piston calipers (Ferodo pads). Brake lines are upgraded to stainless-steel. The rear wheels get the same treatment, but with 13.6″ rotors
The price of an S3-R was nearly twice that of a regular M3. Dinan explains that modifications of this caliber are a “long, difficult, and expensive process” considering that the drive-by-wire system, Double VANOS cam timing, intake air temperature, ignition timing, the air-fuel ratio, and more have to be recalibrated at “nearly every conceivable combination of RPM and load points”
Key Model Year Changes:
First year of BMW Assist (similar to GM’s Onstar), which adds a fin to the rear of the roof. This roof fin is the quick way to differentiate the later model M3’s from the earlier models
Revised rearview mirror (now square)
LED tail lights were added halfway through the previous year (2003)
In the following year (2005), the front suspension is slightly revised on coupes to reduce understeer and improve ride quality (via softer shocks. 2004 and older M3’s had a slightly harsher ride). This was also the first year of the optional Competition package (ZCP)
Virtually no changes between 2005-2006
